about

“Street Sweeper” is bottled up energy and frustration in the form of a song. The lyrics are about the individuals in a larger system exasperated by the political barriers to instigate change, despite ample solutions to the problems in circulation and in discussion. The continued devalued state of the environment is one example of a gridlock of action occurring, while humans alter natural systems in irreversible ways. The driving rhythm of the acoustic guitar is sent snowballing down the mountain of turmoil by the intricate bass line. The lyrics are honest and foreboding about a dark future, and everything comes together during the recurring unison melodies of the vocals and instruments. The upbeat, new-age Americana style and cleverness of the lyrics offsets the seriousness of the message behind the tune.

lyrics

Street sweeper
Don’t bother coming yonder down the road
Legend keeper
The books got something they can no longer hold
Wise teacher
There’s no one in these parts to take it in
Kind people
Some things can’t be fixed with a smile

How come these wheels are turning
But there is no change?
How come these years are burning
But no wiser we gain?
All these things we ‘ought to be learning
Are a source of shame
Might as well turn to stone

High diver
There’s something ‘bout the color of our water
Plane flyer
Watch out for the heaviness of the air
Filthy liars
Gather ‘round we’ll find a place for you in town square
Bus driver
The next stop is many miles away from here

How come these wheels are turning
But there is no change?
How come these years are burning
But no wiser we gain?
All these things we ‘ought to be learning
Are a source of shame
Might as well turn to stone

Fast away the pages of this book
Gone away sunshine has all been took
Take away a map a chance to look
At the way
We’re living half the lives of what we should

How come these wheels are turning
But there is no change?
How come these years are burning
But no wiser we gain?
All these things we ‘ought to be learning
Are a source of shame
Might as well turn to
Might as well turn to
Might as well turn to
Stone
